EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING

SCREEN YOUR CHILD AT AN EARLY AGE

 October 9th and October 10th
2019

Early Childhood Screening is a free check of a child’s growth and development provided by Pine Island Public Schools.  Screening in early childhood supports children's readiness for kindergarten and promotes positive child health and development.  If any areas of concern are identified, children can get the help they need before starting school. Children are not required to “pass” in order to get into kindergarten, but a screening is required before kindergarten entrance.

Early Childhood Screening is being held for 2 days in October  2019 and in March 2020, at Pine Island Elementary School.

This screening is for any un-screened child who:
•           Between the ages of three and four
     •           Is four and has not yet been screened

Screening at age three is best, as it provides the earliest time to offer support and resources to children and families. The screening tools are adjusted for a child’s age, so waiting for a child to learn certain skills before screening is not recommended and provides no benefit.  It can also delay care for any area that might be a concern.

The screening takes about an two hours and includes height, weight, vision, hearing, and a developmental screening, which includes a check of the child’s thinking, language and motor skills.  Parents will also have a health and immunization review with a nurse, followed by an exit interview.  Early childhood screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems, but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

Call the Pine Island School at 356-8876 to secure your appointment. Appointment times range from 7:45 AM until 3:00 PM. Evening appointments are not available because children do not perform their best when tired.  The next screening dates following this are in the fall of 2019 and then spring of 2020.

Early Childhood Screening is required for kindergarten attendance.  Attending preschool/ECFE classes or having well child check- ups with your doctor does not eliminate the requirement for screening.
