Second Grade Curriculum
"Getting Better at Getting Along"


Overview: Second-grade students will learn simple techniques for resolving conflicts. We know children have conflicts over resources (when two or more students want the same thing) and conflicts result over specific needs (power, self-esteem, achievement or friendship.) By portraying familiar situations and letting students have a try at suggesting ways to resolve the conflict we can teach children non-violent ways to settle disputes.

Lesson 1:  How I Listen

          1.  Students will assess their listening skills.
          2.  Students will learn skills that will enable them to be better listeners.
          3.  Students will practice the skills necessary to be good listeners.

Lesson 2: Reflective Listening

          1.  Students will learn feeling words to use in a reflective listening game.     
          2.  Students will practice their listening skills to determine how an individual might feel in a given situation.                           
          3.  Students will practice role-playing reflective listening skills. 

Lesson 3: Listen Up! Talk it Out!

          1.  Students will recognize the importance of good communication, getting all the facts when conflicts arise.
          2.  Students will learn the importance of listening to others to really understand their point of view.
          3.  Students will Role-play the “You Solve It” segment of a video so they can use their newly-learned techniques.    
Lesson 4: How I Argue/Getting Along RAP

           1.  Students will assess what they generally do when they argue.
           2.  Students will learn productive ways to settle arguments vs. non-productive ways, which lead to fights.
           3.  Students will learn a “Rap” which will help them remember the conflict resolution skills.

Lesson 5: Identifying Fouls

            1Students will recognize behavior fouls in a story.
            2.  Students will identify fouls by category.
            3.  Students will explain why fouls are non-productive. 

Lesson 6: Work it Out!

1.  Students will learn what it means to compromise.
            2.  Students will role-play situations requiring compromise.
            3.  Students will learn that compromise brings about a “Win/Win” situation, rather than a “Win/Lose” or “Lose/Lose” situation.
Lesson 7: Ask for Help!

            1.  Students will learn when and where to go for help when the conflict arises.
            2.  Students will learn the role of the mediator in a conflict situation.
            3.  Students will practice being the mediator in a conflict situation.
Lesson 8: How I Solve Problems

             1.  Students will apply the three methods of resolving conflicts to specific situations.
             2.  Students will role-play situations using three different methods to see which one works best. 
Lesson 9: Say How I Feel

              1.  Students will increase 'feeling words' vocabulary.
              2.  Students will practice matching feeling words to situations.
              3.  Students will learn that being able to identify feelings is essential to writing  "I Statements"

Lesson 10: Stress Control 
             1.  Students will relate examples of stress.

              2.  Students will learn methods of stress reduction.
               3.  Students will practice Deep Breathing, Guided Imagery, and Relaxation.

In addition, Second Graders will do a drug-prevention lesson from "The Great Body Shop" during Red Ribbon Week in October.
