Meet the Coaches

Head Coach Scott Miller

     Coach Miller is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Panther girls' basketball team. Before taking over the program, he spent eight seasons as a JV coach and varsity assistant to Rick Canton. Prior to his time with the Pine Island girls' staff, Coach Miller worked in boys basketball. He was a boys 8th grade coach (Pine Island), JV coach (Ellsworth, WI) and assistant coach with the Macalester College men's program for one season. In addition to coaching high school basketball, Coach Miller also worked closely with an AAU program in Minnesota and has coached with that program in the spring and summer for eight years. Besides basketball, Coach Miller has also coached football (3 years), volleyball (8 years), softball (2 years) and track and field (6 years).

JV Coach Jay Wobig
     Jay Wobig is returning to the Panther basketball program after taking the 2016/2017 season off from coaching.  This will be Jay's seventh season coaching at Pine Island, all with the girl's program.  The previous six seasons have all been at the junior high level.  Jay has coached almost every player in the program and one time or another.  He is looking forward to seeing just how much everyone has improved.  When not in the gym Jay can be found in various long-term care facilities in Minnesota.  Jay is a health care administrator and oversees six nursing homes/assisted living facilities in an area that extends from Rochester to Roseviile.  He hopes to be able to use some of the things he learns during his work day to help develop strong leaders and team members on the Panther basketball team.  

C-Squad Coach Ron Gabrielson
    Coach Ron Gabrielson is going into his 39th year of coaching girls basketball. He began coaching B squad for the Mazeppa Indians. After the pairing of Zumbrota and Mazeppa schools, he coached primarily 9th grade, but also 8th grade, and JV as needed for the Zumbrota-Mazeppa program.  He is retired after working as a Manufacturing engineer for Federal Mogul in Lake City.  Ron is excited to  begin a new experience coaching here.

8th Grade Coach Isaac Tschann
    Coach Tschann is entering his first year of coaching basketball for the 8th grade girl’s basketball team.  He is a graduate of Winona St. University, where he has a degree in both Spanish and Coaching. He is currently working at Pine Island elementary school as a reading specialist. Besides basketball this year, Coach Tschann has coached track and field (2 years) and boy’s soccer (2 years). Coach Tschann is a great motivator and looks forward to a great season!

7th Grade Coach Cheryl Simpson
      Coach Simpson is back for her second year coaching at the junior high level in the PI girls' basketball program. Prior to coaching the 8th grade team in 2016-17 she spent two years coaching in the youth girls' basketball program. Coach Simpson is an alumni of Pine Island Schools and the Panther girls' basketball program. She received her coaching certificate while in college at the University of Minnesota; spending a season student coaching with the Hastings High School girls' basketball team. Other coaching experience includes a season of 14-under JO volleyball for the PI Rage.
